Many players shy away from Craps because they get the feeling that it is too difficult to learn. Craps is actually not that complex if you take a few minutes to learn it. It’s more confusing than other casino games, but not much. After reading this guide on how to play craps online, you probably already know more about craps than 90% of the players at the tables. If you haven’t read this guide, we recommend it. We have presented the game in a way that is easy to grasp and that you can use the language in no time!
According to Wikipedia “In 1788 “Krabs” (later Crabs) was an English variation on the dice game Hasard or Hazard. Craps developed in the United States from a simplification of the western European game of hazard. The origins of hazard are obscure and may date to the Crusades. Hazard was brought from London to New Orleans in approximately 1805 by the returning Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville, the young gambler and scion of a family of wealthy landowners in colonial Louisiana.
Although in hazard the dice shooter may choose any number from five to nine to be his main number, de Marigny simplified the game such that the main number is always seven, which is the mathematically optimal choice. Both hazard and its simpler derivative were unfamiliar to and rejected by Americans of his social class, leading de Marigny to introduce his novelty to the local underclass. Fieldhands taught their friends and deckhands carried the new game up the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Celebrating the popular success of his novelty, de Marigny gave the name Rue de Craps to a street in his new subdivision in New Orleans”.

Craps rules – How to play
The game starts with a come-out roll. This is the first term players need to know and understand. The player who throws the dices, or bones as they call them as well, is the shooter. If you are in a land-based casino, the shooter rolls the dices on the craps table, while playing online you just place your bet and hit the “roll” button.
There are 36 possible combinations of the dices, (1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 1-3, 3-1, 1-4, 4-1, 1-5, 5-1, 1-6, 5-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-2, 2-4, 4-2, 2-5, 5-2, 2-6, 6-2, 3-3, 3-4, 4-3, 3-5, 5-3, 3-6, 6-3, 4-4, 4-5, 5-4, 4-6, 6-4, 5-5, 5-6, 6-5, and 6-6) and the sum of the dices varies from 2 to 12. Playing craps, and especially for the come-out roll, there are only three possible outcomes:
- A Natural. If the player rolls a sum of 7 or 11, he wins immediately.
- Craps. If he rolls a 2, a 3 or a 12, he loses directly, but the round is not over and he rolls again.
- Point. Any other dice sum (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10). In a land-based or live casino, the dealer marks your point (the number you rolled) on the table. In an online casino, your point will get another colour (usually white) and will be marked as “On”. Now you will have to roll the dices until you get the same sum. You lose if during this series of rolling the dice you hit a 7, then you’re “seven out”. You lose and the betting round has ended.
Since you understand and “own” the above procedure, you are ready for the next step, which includes all betting options and where the fun part comes!
The pyramid of craps possibilities
It’s no secret that The Number You Are Not Allowed To Say (meaning the 7) has the most possibilities to appear on a double dice roll, since it can appear with six different combinations (6-1, 1-6, 5-2, 2-5, 4-3 and 3-4).
Five combinations form the 6 and the 8 which follow, four combinations form the 5 and the 9, three combinations form the 4 and the 10 while two combinations form the 3 and the 11 and finally, the 2 and the 12 are formed only with one combination. Before you decide your craps strategy, be sure to know this pyramid very well.
Betting on craps table
Pass Line: On the first roll, you win on a 7 or 11, and lose on a 2, 3 or 12. If any other number comes, then that number becomes the point. If the point comes again before a 7, you win even money. But if a 7 comes first, you lose. House edge is 1,41%
Don’t Pass Bar is the opposite bet. On the first roll, you win on a 2 or 3. You lose on a 7 or 11. A 12 doesn’t count either way. If any other number comes, that number becomes the point. If a 7 is rolled before the point is rolled again, you win even money. But if the point is rolled again, you lose. House edge is 1,36%
Come: A come bet is placed after the point has already been established. It works exactly in the same manner as a pass line bet. House edge is 1,41%
Don’t come: A don’t come bet is placed after the point has already been established, also. It works exactly in the same manner as a don’t pass line bet. 1,41%
Odds: At any time after a point has been established, you can take the odds in addition to your original bet. This amount is allowed to be at least double that of the original bet, and usually 3, 4 or 5 times the bet, depending on the point.
Field: Field bets are one-roll bets and can be placed at any time. If a 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11 comes, you win even money. A 2 wins 2 to 1. A 12 wins 2 to 1, and the house edge is 5,56%. In some casinos, the 12 pays 3 to one, in which case the house edge falls at 2,78%. If the shooter rolls a 5, 6, 7 or 8, then you lose. There are 16 winning combinations and 20 losing ones.
The only situation a bet on the Field numbers makes sense is in the rare case both 2 and 12 pay 3 to 1 (house edge is 0%). Also it will make sense when one of 2 or 12 pays 3 to 1 and the other one pays 2 to 1, since on those occasions the house edge is just 2,78%.
BIG 6 / Big 8: If a 6 or 8 is rolled before a 7, you win. House edge is 9,09%
Place bets: These bets are only in action while a point is established. You can bet on a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 to be rolled before a 7. Every time they are, you win. When a 7 is rolled, you lose. Place 4 and 10 pay 9 to 5 (house edge 6,67%), Place 5 or 9 pays 7 to 5 (house edge 4%), Place 6 or 6 pays 7 to 6 (house edge 1,52%).
Buy bets: Buy bets are exactly the same as place bets except you pay 5% commission, to receive the true odds.
Lay bets: The exact opposite of buy bets. You pay 5% commission to lay the true odds. You’re betting a 7 comes before the point number.

Craps Proposition – props bets
Proposition bets are the ones in the centre of the live casino craps table, and on the side of an online casino craps table. They are one-roll bets that may seem appealing to beginners because of the odds, but should be avoided since the house edge is extreme!
Hardway bets: You can place these bets on a 4, 6, 8 and 10. To win, the dice must show the same number on each die. If the number comes up in any other combination, or you roll a 7, you lose. Hard 6 and 8 payout 9 to 1 and the house edge is 9,09%, while Hard 4 and 10 pays out 7 to 1 and the house edge is 11,11%.
Any 7: One roll bet: If you roll a 7, you win. House edge is 16,7%
Any Craps: One roll bet: If a 2, 3 or 12 comes, you win. House edge is 11,11%
Horn: one roll bet. If you roll a 2, 3, 11 or an 12 you win. House edge is 12,5%.
Ace-deuce: If you roll an ace with a two. House edge is 11,11%.
Eleven: One roll bet on Yo-leven: If an 11 comes, you win. House edge is 11,11%
Aces – snake eyes: The shooter rolls two aces. A snake-eye. Since payouts are only 30:1 the house edge is a hefty 13.89%, which is bad news for players…
Twelve – Boxcars: A one-roll bet where players wager on the shooter rolling a 12, or midnight. There is only one combination in all the outcomes of the dice that result in rolling a 12, so the odds are 1 in 36. Since payouts are only 30:1 the house edge is a hefty 13.89%, which is bad news for players…
Play craps online strategy: the 5-count craps method
As in every casino game, there are many betting systems around for craps as well. The 5-count craps method is not for players who want to feel the adrenaline shock. This simple craps strategy will instead help you simplify the game and ensure that you always play with a clear, cool head for the best bets. The 5-count method also helps you minimize your losses at the table, but of course the house edge remains the same.
The goal of the 5-count method is to prevent you from losing a lot of money on bad shooters who quickly fly out of the game. You do not place any bets. The shooter must make five successful rolls of the dice before you risk your first bet. That’s the 5-count.
- 1-Count: if the shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 on the come out, the count is at one (or “1-count”). If the shooter rolls a 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12 on the come out, the count has not begun. The counter remains at zero.
- 2-4 Count: On the second, third, and fourth counts, any number will do, except of course the seven.
- With the successful completion of the 5-count, your betting will begin. Stick to Pass or Come, Don’t Pass or Don’t Come bets, on which the house edge is minimum, and always place or take the odds.
That beats roulette, pai gow poker or any video poker and even blackjack when it’s played with the basic strategy. So, we guess that now you want to win real money playing online! All you need is a casino with a decent payout. And better yet, a great bonus offer.
The offer below allows you to grab one of the best bonuses available to play Craps right now. Make sure you collect it because starting with the right bonus is the best way to explore a real money Casino and enjoy all the games to play there.
