With Los Blancos hosting third-place Sevilla and Barcelona hosting reigning Europa League champion Villarreal, we have the strongest La Liga matchday since October 24, when we had the “Clasico” Barcelona-Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid-Real Sociedad on the same weekend.

Real Madrid won their sixth game in a row in all competitions this week, defeating Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 in the Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti’s club leads Group D with 12 points, ensuring that one La Liga team will advance to the knockout rounds.

Real Madrid has emerged as the league’s undisputed champion. This is owing in part to the troubles and inconsistency of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and, to a lesser extent, Sevilla. But it’s clear that when Real Madrid’s preferred backline of Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, Eder Militao, and Dani Carvajal is in place, these players have no holes. The biggest issue surrounding this squad in recent years – can anyone be a perfect match for Karim Benzema up top? – looks to have been answered, as Vinicius has been on fire all season.

In the next weeks, we’ll learn a lot about this team – and its chances of winning La Liga. Real Madrid’s next schedule includes games against third-place Sevilla this weekend, Athletic Club on Wednesday, a trip to second-place Real Sociedad on December 4, and a home game against fourth-place Atletico Madrid on December 12.

Barca and Xavi still seeking the tunnel’s end

I’m going completely on instinct here, and while I recognize that Barcelona will have a difficult test against Villarreal, I believe Xavi is hitting the right buttons, and the open-play goals will come at some time. Will the moment arrive this weekend? I’m not convinced! I’ll go with the Under 2.5 option and take a chance on Villarreal.

As I have stated, I am really impressed with Real Madrid’s current form. I also like their long-term possibilities, providing everyone stays healthy, but we’ll leave that for another time.

Sevilla is 8-4-1 at home and hasn’t lost since October 3, but this is their first game against one of Spain’s big three (Real Madrid, Atleti, and Barcelona). Based on Sevilla’s Champions League record, which had been poor previous to this week’s 2-0 win over Wolfsburg, I don’t think they’ll pull off the upset here.
