German League format
The 1. Bundesliga is the top tier professional German football league since the season 1962-63. The first Bundesliga games were played on 24 August 1963. Early favourite Koln was the first Bundesliga champion over second place clubs Meidericher SV and Eintracht Frankfurt.
How many teams compete in the top tier German football league? The answer is 18, which play each other home and away during 34 matchdays. The team that finishes in the top position is crowned champion.
The last two in the 18-team table are relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. At the same time the team that finishes in the 16th position will fight to avoid relegation with the 3rd team of the 2. Bundesliga. The winner of this duel stays in the upper house or is promoted, the loser plays in the second division in the coming season.
The first 4 teams in the table are qualified for the Champions League group stage. Teams finishing in positions 5 and 6 will play in the UEFA Europa League, and the 7th will play in the Conference League.
Bundesliga tie breakers
If teams are level on points, tie-breakers are applied in the following order:
- Goal difference for the entire season
- Total goals scored for the entire season
- Head-to-head results (total points)
- Head-to-head goals scored
- Away goals scored Head-to-head
- Total away goals scored for the entire season
- If two clubs are still tied after all of these tie-breakers have been applied, a single match is held at a neutral site to determine the placement. However, this has never been necessary in the history of the Bundesliga.

Former champions and history
Since 2004 Bundesliga introduced a star-system to honour the most successful teams. This honour is called “Verdiente Meistervereine” (“distinguished champion clubs”) which recognises teams that have won three or more championships since 1963 by the display of gold stars on their team badges and jerseys. Founded in 1963 , the Germany Bundesliga is the top football tier of French football. It contains 20 teams. Normally the season runs from August to May, and teams play each other both home and away for a total of 34 match days.

Home advantage
The home advantage in Ligue 1 is comparable to the other top leagues in Europe. It is in fourth place in terms of home advantage, in second place behind La Liga for average home points won and is also second behind Spain’s top league for average home team goal advantage.
