Game selection
First of all, we limit our selection to games from the league with over-odds above 1.80. All odds that are lower are initially excluded. If the rate is unexpectedly high (> 2.20), it is very important to question why this is so. Often there are findings outside the normal statistics that lead to such an assessment, such as feared opponents, starting position (a 1-1 is enough for both) or the short-term injury of the top striker of the favoured team.
The next point is to select games where the home team is the favourite. 1-1 is a popular result, especially with superior guests. After some time you will find out that 1-1 is the dreaded enemy of over 2.5 goals bets. Too often two teams come to terms with the result and you can watch how the motivation to score a winning goal disappears and the beautiful bet goes down the drain. Favoured home teams, on the other hand, tend to play for the winning goal. That leads either to the same or to a counter hit by the visiting team. Both cases bring us the immediate win of the bet.
Team analysis
Once we found games in this range (that should be a few), we look at the two teams in detail.
- First we look at the last 5 home games of the home team (e.g. 3-1, 1-2 and 3-1, 2-2, 1-0). Now we add up the goals scored by the home team and divide them by 5. So 3 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10. Dividing by 5 gives 2.00. We are already with the goals of the home team at 2 goals on average. This way we have the first simple indication that it could be a worthwhile bet.
- Now let’s look at the away team. Here we also take the last 5 away games and look at how many goals were scored away on average. A team with the away results 3-1, 0-0, 2-2, 1-2 and 1-1 comes to odds of 1.20 (1 + 0 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 2 divided by 5 = 1.20 ).
- Together, my two values (2.00 + 1.20) add up to 3.20. This example would be worth a “Over 2.5 goals” tip, since I can assume an average of 3.20 goals.
This strategy is surely only a first simple step to analyze an over / under tip. It and can be further refined. For example, a higher weighting of the most recent games or a closer look at the respective opponent. It should always be noted, however, that the time for the analysis with the subsequent profit should be in a profitable relationship, at least in the long term, and the quantity (higher number of bets) must be weighed against quality (higher value probability due to more time spent on research) got to.
