Did you ever wonder why Bookmakers offer different options for three selections? In this article we explore the Patent bet and its when its best to use this option instead of trixie bet or treble accumulator
Whenever you make three betting selections, you have three different options. The first one, is the obvious one, an accumulator. A bet of all three selections combined, which is also called a treble. Then you have the Trixie system option and the Patent bet, which we will explain in this guide.

What is the patent bet meaning? This bet is a full cover bet of those three selections and even if one of those is correct, then you will win something! But as with every other system bet, players should know the details, check the odds and then make their selection. When we say that a patent bet is a full cover bet for three selections, it means that this bet consists of 7 bets in total. 3 single bets, 3 double bets and 1 treble bet. Or to complicate things a little bit, we could say it consists of a trixie bet plus 3 straight bets.
If our selections are 1, 2 and 3, here a patent bet example and the seven different bets it contains:
- 1 – single
- 2 – single
- 3 – single
- 12 – double
- 13 – double
- 23 – double
- 123 – treble
All combinations of this system are:
- 3 x single bet (1 – 2 – 3)
- 3 x two-way combination (12 – 13 – 23)
- 1 x triple combination (123)
The best online bookmakers in the market offer players a free bet calculator in their betting slip. So as soon, as you made your selections, whether they are football matches, horses, greyhounds or other sports, you can check the possible winnings on all of the above mentioned combinations, as well as for all of them combined.

Patent bet system example
Now that the theoretical basics are known, let’s look at a real sports bet. For our patent system example we have selected three games from the Champions League . Our total budget is € 35. Accordingly, we play each of the seven individual rows with € 5. You can find the exact games, our forecasts and the corresponding betting odds in the table.
How it works
|Games||Our tip||Odds “1”||Odds “X”||Odds “2”|
|Juventus – Tottenham||1||2.10||3.20||3.60|
|Manchester United – Ajax||X||2.00||3.20||4.00|
|Bayern – Liverpool||X||2.15||3.00||3.80|
With just one correct prediction, there is already a profit for us. For example, if Manchester United play a draw we will receive € 16. A nice amount but not even half of our initial investment.
But this changes with a second hit. Assuming Juventus wins against Tottenham as we predicted, our profit would already grow to € 60,10. After deducting the stake, we were left with over € 25.
Now, of course, the jackpot is still missing in the event that we are completely correct with our three tips. Thus our three single bets would be correct (€ 10.50 + € 15 + € 16), as well as our three two-way combinations (€ 33.60 + € 31.50 + € 48) and the combination of all games (100, 80 €). This corresponds to a profit amount of € 255.40. If we subtract our stake from this, we still have a net profit of € 220.40 . Not a bad yield for such a small system, is it? You can do all calculations with our system patent calculator.
The winning combinations in a patent system
- 3 won straight bets for € 41.50
- 3 won two-way combos for € 113.10
- 1 won three-way combination for € 100.80
- The total profit is therefore € 255.40
- The net profit is € 220.40
Difference Between a Patent Bet and a Trixie
Since both options are for three selection bets, lets see the details. A Patent has seven bets. A Trixie only has four, so it is actually a cheaper option. This because those bets contain three double bets and one treble. But, since Trixies don’t contain any of the single bets, they lack some of the winning chances of a patent bet, which is more likely to provide a return, but that is at the expense of a higher stake.
When to use this bet type?
You already know that it consists of seven bets over three different selections. It has three singles, three doubles, and a treble. And this is a popular way to bet because, with the singles, it has a much higher chance of providing a return versus a traditional accumulator and even versus a trixie bet. The difference is also in the prize!
An accumulator costs as a simple straight bet. Lets say 2$. A trixie bet, for the same three selections, costs 8$ and a patent bet costs 14$!
This means that if your selections are strong favorites, you should probably choose to bet on an accumulator, hoping that all three will win and this way your bet will also be a winner. In case you want to cover one or two of your options, which aren’t so “hot”, then you could select a trixie bet. This way, if you get two correct selections, you will get something back. And finally, if you found some great odds and want to cover all options, then you select a patent bet which can be considered to be like insurance on an accumulator. The disadvantage of course, is that it does require a higher stake with it having seven bets. But on the other side of the increased probability of winning is the fact that returns are likely to be lower.
Patent betting strategy
Most betting enthusiasts are also big football fans at the same time. Of course, the first question that arises is whether the patent system also fits in with the most popular sport in the world. As with all system bets, the answer is positive. The reason is simple: soccer games are usually very difficult to predict. Accordingly, they are always quoted extremely lucratively by the betting providers. There are above all tips on the draws, which are always provided with particularly high betting odds. But of course you can choose from the entire portfolio of sports betting for your patent bet. Whether tennis, basketball or ice hockey – you are spoiled for choice.
Can I place an Each Way Patent?
Since those bets are very popular in horse racing betting, many players seek the option to place each way patent bets. An each way bet contains two different bets of equal amounts. A WIN bet and a PLACE bet. The win bet, means that the horse you selected has to win the race and the place bet means that the selected horse has to finish in the top two (or top three, this may vary). So if you place an each way 5$ bet on a horse, the total stake will be 10$. If the selected horse finishes in the first position you will win both bets and if it finishes second (or third in some occasions) you will win the PLACE bet.
So, players can place each way patent, but they should know that an each way Patent bet consists of fourteen bets. Seven of the bets are to win. And seven extra bets in an each way are for the selections to place.

Conclusion: Small but nice
